I wasn’t able to attend the 2014 Fiddler’s Frolics this past weekend in Hallettsville, TX but I was able to listen to the fiddler’s contest on Texas Thunder Internet Radio and it was great! I recommend anyone unable to attend next year to listen to the live broadcast for a great experience. Congratulations to Bubba Hopkins for winning and retaining the Texas State Fiddle Champion title. And congratulations to Johnny and Jason Crisp on their induction into the Texas Fiddlers Hall of Fame. They are the first Father and Son to be inducted at the same time. That’s an amazing accomplishment and a credit to their life long contribution and support of Texas Style Fiddling. The Franklin family has always enjoyed playing and supporting Texas Style Fiddling and the Fiddler’s Frolics. I’m proud of my nephew, Jason Andrew who placed 5th overall this year. Way to go Jason! And I have to say Wade Stockton and Wayne Massengale were awesome as the Emcee’s! The Fryer family and all the great folks who make this event possible deserve a lot of credit for making this the favorite event of the year for so many fiddlers and their families. Check out this cool Brown Jug I received in 1972.

As part of Fiddler Magazine’s 20th Anniversary celebration, they will release a compilation CD with 20 Fiddlers spanning a wide range of styles including Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Bluegrass, Old time, Cajun, Jazz/Swing, Texas contest, Swedish, Mexican and Canadian. I composed a new song for this project to represent the Texas contest style and it is called “Fiddler’s Road”. The title of my song is taken from a small road by the farm where my parents lived and I was raised. Grayson County named the road “Fiddler’s Road” some years ago. They must of realized how many fiddler’s had traveled that road to my parents house and how much fiddling took place there. Thanks to Fiddler Magazine for asking me to be a part of their 20th Anniversary CD!
The Time Jumpers have just finished recording a song with Asleep at the Wheel for their upcoming Album project. While they were in Nashville, AATW recorded songs with several other artists and I played twin fiddles with Jason Roberts on a couple of those. What a blast!
Miranda Lambert has asked The Time Jumpers to record a song with her for her next album project. Can’t wait!
A huge thanks to all my family and friends who came to the Time Jumpers show last night at Choctaw Casino in Durant, OK. It was a thrill to play for you all and I hope everyone enjoyed the show. Hope to see you all again real soon!
